Choose any word from the dictionary and read its definitions. Write a poem using only the language of these definitions. Try repeating them in different combinations and using line break to create unexpected phrases. Experiment with how far you can push the limits of the language you're working with. Use the word you've chosen as the title of the poem.

Relief and our sister publication, The Midnight Diner, run, to the extent that they do at all, on the cold sweat and caffeinated blood of our many volunteers. If you want to help us do what we do (and maybe even do it better), we can probably find a place for you. We always need bloggers and reviewers, and sometimes we have an odd task that needs concentrated attention.
We have an immediate need to fill two positions. Our volunteer Managing Editor and Marketing Director positions are both open and in need of qualified individuals to ensure the steady growth of the journal.
Managing Editor
We need someone who wants to see our small Christian literary venture become a somewhat larger and thriving venue for the best in Christian literature. We need someone who has administrative talents and gifts to keep the rest of us right-brainers on task and on schedule. Our managing editor will love to work with people and will help create a supportive, productive volunteer community online. The managing editor will provide essential administrative support for the coordination of the various branches of ccPublishing NFP.
Marketing Director
The marketing director will be the point person for strategizing and implementing creative promotion of Relief and possibly, on occasion, The Midnight Diner. This position is key to growing our subscription and submission base and thus keeping the organization sustainable. We operate on the Internet equivalent of a shoestring, so the operative word here is creative; this may include ad swaps, guest blogging, conference materials, social media and e-mail marketing, etc.

We are now calling for submissions for our upcoming issue 13.1! The theme for this issue is country living. We are looking for essays, stories, and poems that take us away from city skyscrapers and closer to the eclectic American countryside. We want to be taken to the apex of an Adirondack Mountain, to the front porch of Aunt Bernice's goat farm, to the bayous of Mississippi. Tell us what it was like to plow a field in the 1900's, what it feels like to milk a cow with your hands. And while you're at it, we've always marveled at the art of fly fishing.
We want to see more than the archetypal moonshiners who drive beat up pick-up trucks, and men who play fiddles that are lost in their beards, so give us more than “hillbilly” stereotypes and “hick” dialogue. Give us essays that will haunt us, stories with raw characters that we cannot forget, and poems that hum with nature. Bring the sounds of the American country alive and surprise us by what we find there.

Recently at the end of a creative nonfiction class I taught, a student came to me with a helpless shrug of her shoulders. “I want to write. I want to be a writer. That’s what I want to do with my life.” I felt a gush of pride that I had managed a convert, but pity came next, then fear: What had I done? I immediately knew I needed to fill in what I left out from the class script, the off-stage notes that turn out to be the most important.
